MEALS ON WHEELS
Meals on Wheels delivers ready-made meals to older members of our community who may not be able to leave the house or cook for themselves. In Summit, the service is run by SAGE Eldercare, a local non-profit that relies on donations of money and certain non-perishable foods, as well as volunteers’ time to make their work possible.
Sage Eldercare delivers 46,000 meals every year to around 225 local people who are aged 60 and older and who are frail, homebound, or disabled. This includes those recuperating from an illness, those who are mentally or physically impaired, those without family or friends to shop for them, or those needing a special diet.
We discovered that 20-25 of the people they serve have NO food source other than Meals on Wheels and rely on the service completely for all their meals.
HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT
Donate Food Items
You can send at check made to 'SAGE Eldercare' to the address Meals on Wheels, SAGE Eldercare, 290 Broad Street, Summit, NJ or you can online at: https://sageeldercare.networkforgood.com/projects/32504-sage-eldercare-s-annual-fund
Donate Food Items
You can also donate non-perishable food items to their small food pantry. They prefer items like low sodum soups, peanut butter, granola bars etc. These items will help the elderly people survive over the weekends and holidays when there is no meals on wheels service. Food pantry donations can be delivered to the lobby of the SAGE Eldercare ofices at 290 Broad Street, Summit NJ, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.
They need volunteer drivers to deliver the meals and stop for a quick chat with the elderly. They also need volunteers to lend a hand with running errands and grocery shopping. Volunteers drivers are needed Monday to Friday 8am-5pm. SAGE are very flexible about much time people can give to volunteer. It can be any day and any number of hours. They desperately need extra help in the summer, spring and winter breaks when their regular volunteers go on vacation, so they are happy for short term volunteers during those times.

"Meals On Wheels is a great cause to donate to because of how helpful they are to Summit's old people and when you donate it will make a big difference in their day."
